Why Your Human Needs Central Cooling This Summer (A Cat’s Guide)
Hello, humans. It’s me — Thor (you may know me as Whiskers) the resident feline overlord of your condo. I have important business: I like to be heated by a sun-beam, not sweating humans, and I wish to bask in air that doesn’t feel like a sauna. And yes, that means our cozy condo needs some cooling this year.
Out of curiosity, I’ve sniffed out the barriers you might face. And now, I’m here to give tips (and a little judgment) on how to get it done.
Barrier #1: Cost — Smart Spending Now Will Pay Off Later.
Look, I don’t care about dollars, but I know you do. And without cutting into my catnip, there are a few things that can help save you money. Installing a heat pump or mini split for cooling is an investment. And there are rebates!
BC Hydro has come out with some rebates specifically for condo owners.
- Ductless mini-split heat pump – one comfortable room for cat naps: $1,000
- Ductless multi-split heat pump – up to three rooms: $750 per head, up to 3 heads
ENERGY SAVINGS PROGRAM CONDO AND APARTMENT REBATE
Not sure if you can afford the comfort with the toys and pillows I need? Check and see if you would qualify for the Energy Savings Program! This program gives everyone the opportunity to install these essential cat friendly upgrades, no matter your income level. Complete the ESP pre-screening and pre-registration on the CleanBC Savings Page.
| UPGRADE | INCOME LEVEL 1 | INCOME LEVEL 2 | INCOME LEVEL 3 |
| Ductless multi-split heat pump | $5,000 | $4,000 | N/A |
| Ductless mini-split heat pump | $5,000 | $4,000 | N/A |
| Heat pump water heater | $3,500 | $2,800 | N/A |
Rebate coverage is based on the combined income of all adults in your home and how many people live in your home, including adults and children but amazing not pets…? Can that be right? Hiss to that.
Pro tip from me:
- Get pre-approval from BC Hydro — just like you would never assume that I want you to pick me up, BC Hyrdo also likes you to ask.
- Your strata council will need to approve it too. Yes, even if they’re a reluctant group (see below).
Will this investment pay off? Yes! In plain human words: summer heat is no longer occasional — it’s expected. Which means your condo will be:
- Warmer inside,
- Less comfortable for sleep and work, and
- Less appealing to guests (or future buyers).
Today’s climate calls for cooling to become standard in new homes in our area. That means that when we’re selling my castle, we’ll be competing with other units that may have these features and may also have other cooling features like Low E glass. Believe me as this condo market continues to be catty, every advantage matters.
Barrier #2: All Things Strata
First, the By-laws — Those Fancy Human Rules
Ah yes, the “you can’t do that because of the rules” barrier. Strata by-laws can block installations because they’re worried about holes in the building, aesthetics, or precedent.
Whiskers’ advice:
- Read the by-laws first — know what’s allowed.
- If you need to tweak them, draft a proposal for the council. Be persuasive.
- Show examples of other condos that installed cooling successfully — humans like evidence.
Second, Tepid Councils — As slow and direct as a rat in a maze
Some councils like to sit, and resist change. They worry about cost, damage, or complaints from other owners.
Whiskers’ strategy:
- Bring data and experts. Let a qualified HVAC human explain it.
- Offer a pilot project — maybe install a small unit in one condo first.
- Remind them: happy pets = happy humans. I demand comfort.
- If all else fails, volunteer for council – just don’t have the meetings at my place.
Barrier #3: Breaching the Building Envelope — That’s a Big Concern
Drilling holes? Touching exterior walls? Humans panic. Especially after the Leaky Condo era of the late 90s. But fear not: modern ductless systems are minimally invasive.
Whiskers’ wisdom:
- Choose installation methods that are safe and warranty-friendly. Ask your R&B tech about penetrations and flashing and how things are sealed.
- Document your plan for sealing and waterproofing, and if necessary, take responsibility for the work if it affects the building.
- Trust the pros — only hire installers from the Home Performance Contractor Network (HPCN) where My favourite cooling company have trained like dogs to ensure they follow the best practices.
The Bottom Line (A Cat Summarizes)
- Comfort is essential.
- Rebates make installation easier.
- Councils need facts.
- Building envelope concerns? Handled by professionals.
Follow these steps, and you’ll have a cool condo this summer. And I’ll have the purrfect space for my needs.
