Essential Drain Cleaning Machines for Residential Use

How R&B is equipped for Tackling Clogs Efficiently

Storm season is almost upon us and while it’s my personal favorite season, it’s a busy one at R&B.  Imagine the illusion of being cozy inside as the rain pounds restlessly against the windows.  You are fine now, but maybe you also worry that you’re in Vancouver where each fall, the spectacular storms challenge neighborhood sewer systems, causing power outages and flooding.

What if, just as you settle in with a cup of tea and Koas on Netflix for entertainment purposes, you hear the telltale gurgling sound from the bathroom, or worse, your little one comes up from the basement rec room with wet socks?  What happens after you realize your drain is clogged? Or your sump is overflowing? Desperate to avoid a flooding disaster and maybe even an insurance claim, you will reach for you trusty phone to call R&B.  What will we do?  What will we bring?  How will we measure up against the storm?  Let me tell you.

Residential drain cleaning is a task that homeowners often face, especially during times of heavy rainfall or when dealing with old plumbing systems. Fortunately, there are several types of drain cleaning machines designed specifically for these scenarios, each with its own set of advantages and applications and we have them all.

Drain Cleaning Machines with Drum Augers:

For more stubborn clogs or larger pipes, a drain cleaning machine with a drum auger attachment is often necessary. These machines feature a motorized drum that houses a longer and thicker cable than handheld augers. The cable is fed into the drain while the drum rotates, allowing it to break up and clear away tougher blockages such as tree roots or compacted grease. Drum augers are suitable for use in storm sewers, floor drains, and main sewer lines.

Hydro-Jetting Machines:

When traditional methods fail to clear a stubborn clog or when preventative maintenance is required, hydro-jetting machines offer a powerful solution. These machines use high-pressure water jets to blast away debris and buildup from the inside of pipes, restoring them to their original capacity. Hydro-jetting is particularly effective for removing grease, mineral deposits, and tree roots that may be obstructing the flow of water. While hydro-jetting machines are typically more expensive and require professional expertise to operate safely, they provide a thorough and long-lasting solution to drainage problems.  They are also an essential part of apartment building maintenance.

Is the line clear? Or did we just punch a hole in the debris?  Or is the pipe broken?  Or has it sunken or collapsed? The only way to know is to look!

Line Cameras for Pipe Inspection:

While clearing a clog is essential, it’s equally important to identify the root cause (ha ha, get it?  ROOT- ahem. Sorry) to prevent future blockages. Line cameras, also known as sewer inspection cameras or pipe inspection cameras, are invaluable tools for diagnosing plumbing issues within residential drain systems. These small, waterproof cameras are attached to flexible cables and inserted into the drain or sewer line once the water has been drained. As they travel through the pipes, they provide real-time video footage of the interior, allowing plumbers or homeowners to identify cracks, leaks, root intrusions, and other defects that may be contributing to drainage problems.

Is there DIY drain cleaning?  You bet!  For smaller localized in-home clogs and maintenance, you can try before you “buy”.

Handheld Drain Augers:

Also known as plumbing snakes, handheld drain augers are perhaps the most common and versatile drain cleaning tools found in residential settings. These simple yet effective devices consist of a flexible cable with a corkscrew-like auger at one end. By inserting the auger into the drain and rotating it manually or with a crank, homeowners can dislodge and remove clogs caused by hair, grease, or other debris. Handheld augers are ideal for minor clogs in sinks, showers, and bathtubs.  Not storm worthy, but a potential DIY solution.

Enzymatic Drain Cleaners:

In addition to mechanical and water-based solutions, enzymatic drain cleaners offer a chemical alternative for maintaining clean and odor-free drains. These cleaners contain specialized bacteria and enzymes that digest organic matter, such as hair, soap scum, and food particles, without damaging pipes or harming the environment. Enzymatic drain cleaners are best used as a preventative measure to keep drains clear and functioning properly between more intensive cleaning sessions.

Conclusion:

In the midst of a storm, facing the aftermath of great rainfall, or just cleaning up after dinner, the importance of a reliable drainage and drain cleaning machine cannot be overstated. Whether it’s a handheld auger for quick fixes or a hydro-jetting machine for tackling stubborn blockages, having the right tools on hand can make all the difference.
